Prof. Arup Bose and Prof. B.K. Kale
In recognition of their
outstanding contribution to statistics Prof. Arup Bose, Indian Statistical
Institute, Kolkata and Prof. B.K. Kale, Retired Head of the Deptt. of
Statistics, University of Pune were presented National Awards in Statistics by
Shri Oscar Fernandes , Minister of
State for Statistics & Programme Implementation (Independent Charge) in an award presentation ceremony held on 23rd August,
2004 at Scope Complex, New Delhi.
Ministry of Statistics
& Programme Implementation has instituted two National Awards in Statistics
for outstanding contribution in the field of Statistics. One award is given to senior statisticians
in the memory of Prof. P.V. Sukhatme and the other award is given to young
statisticians in honour of Prof. C.R. Rao.
These awards are given in alternate years and each award carries a cash
prize of Rs. one lakh.
The first National Award in
Statistics in the memory of Prof. P. V. Sukhatme was given in 1999-2000 to
Prof. J. K. Ghosh, distinguished statistician and former Director, Indian
Statistical Institute, Kolkata followed by the National Award in Statistics,
for the young statistician category, given for the year 2000-2001 jointly to
Dr. Rahul Mukerjee, Professor, Indian Institute of Management, Kolkata and Dr.
Rajeeva Laxman Karandikar, Professor, Indian Statistical Institute, New Delhi
for their outstanding contribution to Statistics . For the year 2001-2002, the National Award in Statistics in the
memory of Prof. P.V. Sukhatme was given to Prof. Prem Narain, former Director
of Indian Agricultural Statistics Research Institute, New Delhi.
Shri Oscar Fernandes,
Minister of State for Statistics & Programme Implementation (Independent
Charge) presented the National Awards in Statistics to Professor Arup Bose and
Prof. Balvant Keshav Kale for their
outstanding contribution to statistics.
Prof. Bose received the National Award in Statistics for the year
2002-03, for young statisticians category, instituted in honour of Prof. C.R. Rao and Prof. B.K. Kale received the National Award in Statistics for the
year 2003-2004, for senior statisticians category, instituted in the memory of
Prof. P.V. Sukhatme.

Dr. Bose
receiving the National Award in Statistics for the year 2002-03, for young statisticians category
Dr. Arup Bose has made
significant research contributions in diverse areas, including resampling
plans, sequential analysis and asymptotics.
He has also made substantial contributions to statistics of diffusion
processes, rates of convergence, multinomial selection problems, strong laws, U
statistics and Mm estimates.
Dr. Bose’s work in resampling provides a deep and powerful understanding
of the subject from the applied as well as the theoretical point of view. This work has had significant impact on
areas such as time series, linear models, general dependent models and
nonparametric estimates.
Dr. Bose is a dedicated
teacher. He is a fellow of the Institute of Mathematical Statistics (IMS), USA,
which is one of the world’s leading international societies of statistics. He is also an Editor of the prestigious
statistics journal Sankhya.
Professor B.K. Kale has
served as Head, Department of Statistics, University of Pune, besides serving
as Visiting Professor at the University of Waterloo, Canada. He carried out
fundamental research in the areas of statistical inference such as solutions of
likelihood equations, analysis of outliers, estimating equations and reliability
and life testing. His work on detection of outliers, testing for outliers and
masking effects of outliers is considered an important methodological
contribution in addition to clarification of theoretical issues. Prof. Kale has written two books, published
70 papers in reputed statistical journals and guided 15 Ph.D. students. His book titled “Life Testing and
Reliability Estimation” has been translated into Japanese. Professor Kale is a Fellow of the American
Statistical Association. He was awarded
the Principal V.K. Jog Best Teacher Award in February 1993 by the University of
Pune.
