QUARTERLY ESTIMATES OF GROSS DOMESTIC PRODUCT

FOR THE THIRD QUARTER (OCTOBER-DECEMBER) OF 2005-06

 

 

 

            The Central Statistical Organisation (CSO), Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation has released the quarterly estimates of Gross Domestic Product (GDP) for the third quarter [Oct-Dec (Q3)] of 2005-06, both at constant (1999-2000) and current prices. The details of the estimates are presented below.

 

Estimates at constant (1999-2000) prices

2.            Quarterly GDP at factor cost at constant (1999-2000) prices for Q3 of 2005-06 is   estimated at Rs. 6,95,382 crore, as against  Rs. 6,46,000 crore in Q3 of 2004-05, showing a growth rate of  7.6 per cent over the corresponding quarter of previous year.  

3.         The sectors which registered significant growth in Q3 of 2005-06 over Q3 of 2004-05 are, ‘manufacturing’ at 8.4 per cent,  ‘construction’ at 11.5 per cent, ‘trade, hotels, transport and communication’ at 10.3 per cent, ‘financing, insurance, real estate and business services’ at 9.1 per cent, and ‘community, social and personal services’ at 8.1 per cent.

 

4.            According to the information furnished by the Department of Agriculture & Cooperation (DAC), which has been used in compiling the estimates of GDP from agriculture in Q3 of 2005-06, the production of rice, coarse cereals, pulses and oilseeds has gone up by 6.0 per cent, zero per cent, 10.5 per cent and 7.0 per cent, respectively during the kharif season of 2005-06. Production of cotton is, however, expected to decline by 3.2 per cent, while that of sugarcane is expected to increase by 14.9 per cent, respectively during 2005-06 over the estimates of the previous year.

 

5.            According to the latest estimates available on the Index of Industrial Production (IIP), the indices of mining, manufacturing and electricity registered growth rates of 0.4 per cent, 8.9 per cent and 4.8 per cent, respectively during April-December, 2005-06, as compared to the growth rates of 5.1 per cent, 9.2 per cent and 6.4 per cent, respectively in these sectors in the corresponding period of 2004-05.  The key indicators of construction sector, namely, cement and finished steel registered growth rates of 9.3 per cent and 6.2 per cent, respectively during April-December of 2005-06, as against the growth rates of 8.4 per cent and 9.3 per cent, respectively in the corresponding period of previous year.

 

6.         Among the services sectors, the performance indicators of Railways, namely, net tonne kilometers and passenger kilometres have shown growth rates of 5.3 per cent and  10.8 per  cent, respectively during April-December of 2005-06.  The other key indicators, namely, production of commercial vehicles, cargo handled at major ports, cargo handled by civil aviation, passengers handled by civil aviation, number of telephones installed, aggregate bank deposits, bank credits and revenue expenditure (non-plan) of central government, respectively have shown growth rates of  9.7 per cent, 11.4 per cent, 13.0 per cent, 18.4 per cent, 36.4 per cent, 16.0 per cent, 29.4 per cent and 11.8 per cent, respectively, during April-December of 2005-06 over April-December of 2004-05. 

 

7.         GDP at factor cost at current prices in Q3 of 2005-06, is estimated at Rs. 8,68,921 crore, as against Rs. 7,73,635 crore in Q3, 2004-05, showing a rise of 12.3 per cent. 

 

8.         The wholesale price index (WPI) in respect of the groups, food articles, fish, minerals, manufactured products, electricity and all commodities, has risen by 4.3 per cent, 11.3 per cent, 22.1 per cent, 3.5 per cent, 4.2 per cent, and 4.6 per cent, respectively during April-December, 2005-06 over the corresponding period of 2004-05. The consumer price index for industrial workers (CPI-IW) has shown a rise of 4.3 per cent during April-December of 2005-06 over April-December of 2004-05.

 

9.            Estimates of GDP at factor cost and the growth rates, by kind of economic activity for Q3 and April-December of 2005-06 and the corresponding period in 2004-05 at constant (1999-2000) and current prices are given in Statements 1 to 4.

 

10.       The next release of quarterly GDP estimates for the quarter January-March, 2006 (Q4 of 2005-06) will be on 31.05.2006.
