Dr. Jeemol Unni in her paper ‘Informal Sector Activities in Rural India’ presented results of a methodological study conducted to estimate the size of the informal sector in the Ahmedabad city. She explained that Linked Household-cum-Enterprise Survey approach has been adopted to collect the information on the informal sector as enterprise survey based approach tends to miss out certain categories of single person own account enterprise. The approach comprised conducting a detailed probe through a household survey to identify informal sector activities of men and women, some of which might otherwise have not been reported. All the enterprises so obtained were then included in the enterprise survey enabling estimation of the contribution of specific groups of informal sector workers in terms of GDP.
